Blogging Instructions

Posting to Your Blog

1. The purpose of the Ethics class blog is to promote a free and meaningful exchange of ideas among class members in order to enrich the education of all. The blog is NOT a place to complain about class. If you are having a problem, please see me in person.

2. All blog posts are graded assignments. Posts must be submitted by the due date of an assignment, regardless of whether we meet on that day.  Late posts will lose one point per day.  Any post more than five days late may be submitted for half-credit.

2. Normally, you will post to your blog twice each week. Your blogs may be a response to an assigned reading, another student’s work, or some other assignment. Sometimes your blog will be a “free post” about a recommended topic. Please check my blog and/or the Ethics website for the specifics of each assignment.

3. To receive credit, each post must be two full paragraphs.  I will not give you a number of lines or sentences that make up a paragraph, but your writing must reflect careful thought and consideration of both subject and expression. Two paragraphs is a minimum; I encourage you to go beyond the minimum.

4. Your blog posts should reflect the traits of good writing: strong ideas, clear organization, a unique and engaging voice, excellent word choice, good sentence fluency, and attention to conventions. Although I won't take off points for minor mistakes, I will deduct points for sloppy or careless writing and grammar. I will be considering quality in addition to completeness when I assign grades for these.
Please include in each post: the name of the assignment and its due date.

5. Finally, remember that a blog is a public space.  Do not share overly personal information, like last names, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.  Don't share other people's private information or use your blog to disparage others.

Setting Up Your Blog

1. Set up your blog by creating an account (or signing in with a Google account) at Blogger.  You can be creative with your title, name, and set-up, keeping in mind the school’s Acceptable Use Policy, and particularly that you should not share any personal information (like a phone number, last name, or the school name), or include anything inappropriate for a school forum.  In the "About" section or page, describe yourself--again, without providing personal information.

2. You can change the appearance of your blog in any way you'd like.  Both Blogger have a number of templates you can use, and certain aspects you can customize.

3. Please check your settings for comments, making sure that anyone can comment on your blog without approval (this will help make sure that everyone gets points for commenting).

4. When your blog is set up, please email me the URL so that I can post it as a link from the Ethics blog.  Even if you use a pen name, the link from my blog will be your first name so we know who is who.  Also, please include a link to my blog in your links list, so that students commenting on your blog can easily return to mine and navigate to other student blogs.
